THE GOLDEN FLEECE, York
- Yorkshires most haunted inn -
FRIDAY NIGHT EVENT
A DH TEAM EVENT
HISTORY
The Golden Fleece dates back to 1503, and is situated opposite the famous Shambles area of the City. It has no actual foundations, hence the rather higgledy-piggledy layout of the ceilings and floors therein. Numerous landlords have come and gone during this time, with the wife of one such landlord - John Peckett, who was also the Mayor of York - still being associated with the building; the rear yard of the Golden Fleece is named 'Peckitts Yard' after Lady Alice Peckett. According to some, the Golden Fleece used to house the bodies od those who were hanged at nearby Bale Hill prior to their families collecting them...if they ever did collect them.
GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS
The Golden Fleece in the city centre of York has long been recognised as a building with a long history of ghosts, hauntings and paranormal activity, and is highly regarded as perhaps the most haunted pub in York; it is thought that there may be at least 5 or more resident spirits within its walls.
THE GHOST of LADY PECKETT
It is believed that one such ghost who still wanders the Golden Fleece is that of Lady Alice Peckett, wife of landlord and Mayor of York John Peckett.
She is thought to walk the buildings corridors and visit the bedrooms on the upper floors. Many have named her as the spectral figure who is seen to walk through the function room wall. Whenever she has been present there is a sweet perfume scent in the air.
ST CATHERINE'S ROOM
Guests have reported a very oppressive sensation in this room, and the figure of a woman dressed in black has been seen walking past the window...when nobody is supposedly in the room at the time.
THE BAR AREAS
In the bar areas of the Golden Fleece, reports of a man dressed in the clothing characteristic of the 17th century have been noted. He has been nicknamed 'One eyed Jack' and reputedly carries a flintlock pistol. Did he die here? The figure of a Grumpy old man has also been seen...although he apparently does not speak.
THE SPECTRAL AIRMAN
Perhaps the most recent ghost- in historical context - to haunt the Golden Fleece is that of a WWII airman. After getting rather worse for drink he apparently fell from a window on the 3rd floor. However, some believe that he actually hanged himself on the premises rather than dying in a fall.
